Thanks to its microgrid, the airport can generate its own power while maintaining connection to the main power grid as a back-up. Since the natural gas and solar project was completed in 2021, it has saved the airport more than $1 million per year in electricity costs. It serves as a camouflaged lookout, allowing visitors to watch a huge range of bird species ‘coming in to land’, along with other local wildlife. Aeroporti di Roma (ADR) – a Corporate Partner of the FTE Digital, Innovation & Startup Hub – has inaugurated a new solar farm at Rome Fiumicino Airport. It is the largest self-consumption photovoltaic system at a European airport, as well as one of the largest systems in the world within an airport perimeter. The new infrastructure was designed by ADR and built by Enel in collaboration with Circet, following a European public tender after which the integrated contract was assigned. It extends for almost 2.5km and is made up of approximately 55,000 mono-crystalline silicon panels. In a global first for the aviation industry and reaffirming the New Terminal One’s commitment to environmental sustainability, the fully electric GSE fleet will be shared by ground handlers. This marks the first time that any airport terminal in the world has procured a centralised all-electric GSE fleet.
